Soft Pastel Demonstrations & Workshops
Are you like the other members of your local art club fed up with seeing the same old boring demonstrations produced on tiny little pieces of paper by ex-art teachers that have followed the same formula for the last 50 years. You know the ones where you fall asleep and wake up when it’s time to go home and sometimes are not sure whether the instructor done the same thing!
Not much fun are they! Unfortunately it is these sort of demonstrations that put a lot of people of this wonderful medium. How do you fancy a soft pastel demonstration or workshop that is completely the opposite?!
My soft pastel painting demonstrations are all about producing large, dramatic, atmospheric soft pastel paintings with the emphasis on showing how with a few basic techniques and some enthusiasm anyone can produce an exciting, vibrant painting that positively oozes atmosphere using this exciting medium! Using soft pastel is almost like going back to play school there are no rules, you can use your fingers and you are allowed to get as messy as you like - so it should be taught that way!
The only restrictions to your creativity are the ones that you impose yourself ……”
During my pastel demos & workshops I take the time to demonstrate a few creative techniques that will help you to take your pastel painting to the next level and I also include practical advice on keeping your work space dust free, storing your pastel paintings and much more.
Soft Pastel Painting Demonstrations: These usually last around two hours or the duration of your meeting and consist of a full demonstration of my technique with the aim being to produce a large painting full of drama and atmosphere by the end of the session. I am happy to stick around after the meeting to answer any particular questions anyone may have although I do make a point of stopping at regular intervals throughout the demonstration to allow for questions on different techniques. I also try to make the demonstrations fun and entertaining and guarantee at least one terrible joke per demo.
Soft Pastel Workshops: When you book me for a workshop you get me for the whole day (poor you!). Workshops usually last 10am-4pm with a break for lunch although of course I am happy to accommodate other times. With a workshop the idea is for everyone in the group to complete a painting by the end of the day - no one gets left behind and more importantly everyone has fun! To ensure this happens I break the painting time down into manageable sections which allows plenty of time for evaluating each stage thus ensuring that everyone will be able to keep up. This results in everyone taking part in the workshop having a fun and productive day.
Pastel is one of those mediums that is accessible to everyone and I like to think that no one regardless of whether they have picked up a pastel before or not will walk away from one of my workshops without a completed painting that they are proud of and that they also had a lot of fun producing.
Hi Greg Just wanted to say many thanks for a really enjoyable and informative day yesterday. Must admit my stomach sank when you revealed "our painting"! LOL! However, you shared your tips and techniques which made a great day in a great venue. Thanks for the inspiration! - Jackie Maher
Wow what a workshop! You certainly opened my eyes. I didn't realise just how much all the little habits I have picked up have stifled my progress. As you said on Saturday we all just assume that because it's in a book that it must be how things are done and never think to question it. I have a feeling that me and watercolour are going to become best buddies again lol - Dave Stockton
Greg has a refreshing, almost rebellious approach to painting with watercolours, flying in the face of the “rule books”. From large format canvass through broad and chunky brushes to scraping with a blade his approach certainly gets the attention of the room and invites questions from the audience.- Grange Art Society
Hi Greg, Thank you for your waterfall demo, we all enjoyed it and hopefully helped us all to loosen up, you made it look very easy, needs lots of practice! We hope you enjoyed the evening and the ‘banter’, we did! - Bolton Art Circle
Just thought you should have another "thank you" for the great workshop you did for us at Knott End. The feedback was excellent at the following meeting - Over Wrye Art Society
Hi Greg just a quick email to say thank you you so much for the wonderful workshop yesterday. I was nearly ready for throwing my watercolours in the bin but you have shown me the way forward. Thanks for sharing your approach & experience and see you next year! - Debbie Falson
We all enjoyed your demo and definitely learnt things we didn’t know before. You went a long way to de-mystifying watercolours for some of us, and those of us who tend to steer clear of this medium went home with a resolution to try it again.
We will most definitely keep you in mind for the future and pass on your name to any other society who might be interested. Thank you again.- Grange Art Society
Thank you on behalf of all members who attended your demonstration a couple of weeks ago. I have just had the glowing report from Gwyn after today's meeting. Everyone enjoyed it and felt they had picked up lots of tips on technique. Hope you enjoyed it.- Morecambe Bay Art & Craft Society
As with my paintings I like to keep the prices for my demonstrations & workshops at a reasonable level so that as many people as possible can afford them and as a result of this I have demonstrated not just for larger established art societies up and down the country but also small local clubs with only a few members and even groups of painters who just like to paint together who have been looking for a little inspiration. If you have rejected the idea of having a professional artist come and demonstrate or provide a workshop before on the assumption that it would be too expensive then now may be the time to reconsider.
If you feel that your club may benefit from a demonstration or soft pastel workshop that’s a little different then please fill in the short form below with your requirements or call me on: 0792 6161652 and I will be happy to have a chat with you.

Now that the proverbial dust (and champagne) has settled following my dad’s birthday celebrations this weekend, I would like to say a big thank you to you for creating for us an amazing present for my dad. He - and all of the family - loved the painting, and very much appreciated your note. Thank you very much once again! - Sophie Galasinski
We are really pleased with the paintings exactly as we expected. They are currently with the framer and we are really looking forward to hanging them. Communication whilst purchasing the paintings was excellent and they were delivered on time and in perfect condition. I would not hesitate to purchase further paintings from Greg. - Trevor Court
Picture arrived safe and sound and we are, of course, very pleased with it.
We are re-curating our pictures to locate it in the best setting. At the moment it is with Stephen Darbishire and Shirley Shackleton but it may end up with Geoff Pooley and W Heaton Cooper - I hope you approve. Many thanks for what you have done. - Anthony Collinge
The painting arrived quickly & with great packaging to protect it during delivery, it was like pass the parcel when opening it as there were so many layers of packaging. I loved the contents too, exactly like the photograph of it on your website. The mount & the frame compliment it perfectly. I’m sure when my husband receives it as a surprise birthday present later this month he will love it as much as I do. I can’t wait to give it to him now to see his reaction. Buying online when you haven’t seen the actual painting before felt a little daunting but this couldn’t have been any better. Good communication before buying, great post & packaging & a beautiful original painting at the end. Many thanks. - Val Watson
