Piers Gill – Scafell Pike

Piers Gill referred to by some as the 'Grand Canyon of the Lake District' is the name of the dramatic gorge that cuts through the northern face of Lingmell.

The popular Corridor Route crosses the deep cut gill after leaving Lingmell Col on the descent from Scafell Pike.

The area is well known amongst hillwalkers, not only for its striking presence but also because it's a bit of an accident blackspot and unfortunately turns up in the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Teams reports on an increasingly regular basis. This is usually where disoriented walkers have ended up straying off the corridor route into the top of the gorge itself.

Piers Gill is no place for the inexperienced as there is no path with the way down involving a number of increasingly difficult waterfall climbing pitches that can only be safely descended using a rope. Thus the number of accidents! Plus it should be noted that there is no mobile phone coverage in the area.

That said it does look does look very dramatic and is an inspiring subject I've been meaning to have a go at painting for some time.
