This is a painting all about role change. Usually when people paint rapeseed it is when it is in full flower and the vivid yellow of the flowers provide the focus of the painting. So, I thought it would be interesting to turn this on its head and paint the rapeseed when the flowers are nearly all gone and the seed pods have turned black ready for harvest then contrast that with a bright yellow sunset.
It was important to me that the sunset appeared as bright as possible which is why I added the dark tree on the right, this dark element along with the bright highlights that have been picked out on the left of the tree and in the foreground all add to the illusion of light.
The original watercolour painting is 340mm x 240mm and is available either framed or unframed.
