Sundown Over Striding Edge

Striding Edge ridge on Helvellyn is nothing short of spectacular at any time of the day and will hold a special place in the memory of anyone who has had the privilege to cross it (whether they enjoyed it or not) but if you really want to join the ranks of the privileged then you have to make a point to see it it either at sunrise or sunset.

Unfortunately this does mean that you will have to be confident enough to get up or down the mountain in the dark depending on which option you go for and this is why to see it with your own eyes makes it so special because there are not that many people who will do this. Yup there's no queue on the edge at that time!

This painting is for those of you who have done it and maybe forgot to take your camera (doh!) and would like a little reminder and also for those amongst you who would like to see it but don't have the chops or the inclination to be climbing up Helvellyn at 2am in the morning or traipsing down it in the dark late at night. And who would blame you after all the fact that the pub will be firmly closed when you get back to Patterdale is a good enough reason not to do it - it's not the same when you know there's not going to be a glass of something nice waiting at the end for you 😉👍.
