Buttermere is lovely. That's it there is no other way to put it!
It is far enough out of the way to be reasonably quiet and tourist free even though one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area (Honister slate mine) is just over the pass but it does not have the same haunting emptiness that Wasdale has. Whether you have a quiet walk round the lake and pop into the local pub for a spot of lunch or tackle Wainwrights favourite 'Haystacks' Buttermere is a really nice place to while away the day.
